✔️ Mode of Action: Preneed-CI

• Iron: Plays a crucial role in the formation of hemoglobin, essential for oxygen transport via red blood cells. It serves as a cofactor for enzymes, including those involved in electron transport. Adequate iron levels are vital for effective red blood cell production (erythropoiesis).
• Folic Acid: Supports nucleoprotein synthesis and helps maintain normal red blood cell production. It is converted into its active form, tetrahydrofolic acid, in the liver and plasma. Folic acid prevents neural tube defects in women of childbearing potential, with increased requirements during pregnancy.
• Zinc: Acts as a cofactor for over 100 enzymes, supports DNA synthesis, and helps maintain a healthy immune system. Zinc also plays a role in insulin function, taste, and smell.

✔️ Side Effects: Preneed-CI

• Iron (Common): Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, epigastric pain, dark stools, vomiting.
• Iron (Rare/Severe): Hemosiderosis (with prolonged use of large amounts), urine discoloration, dental stains (with certain formulations), heartburn.
• Folic Acid: Bronchospasm, erythema, malaise, itching (pruritus), rash, slight flushing.
• Zinc: Nausea, vomiting, gastric irritation, elevated levels of serum alkaline phosphatase, amylase, and lipase (which may return to normal after 1-2 years of therapy), and potential neurologic deterioration.

✔️ Pharmacology: Preneed-CI

This timed-release capsule is a combination of carbonyl iron, folic acid, and zinc sulfate monohydrate. Carbonyl iron has at least 98% iron content, offering high bioavailability with low toxicity, making it a safer and more effective option for iron supplementation.

✔️ Dosage & Administration: Preneed-CI

• Adults: One capsule daily before food, or as directed by a physician.
• Note: Always take medicine according to the advice of a registered physician.

✔️ Administration:

• For optimal absorption, it is recommended to take the supplement on an empty stomach. However, to minimize gastrointestinal irritation, it can be taken with or after meals.

✔️ Drug Interactions: Preneed-CI

• Carbonyl iron reduces the absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penicillamine.
• Folic acid may interact with antiepileptic drugs, reducing plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone.

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component or in those with iron overload conditions.

✔️ Overdose Effects: Preneed-CI

• Symptoms of carbonyl iron overdose include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak/rapid pulse, fever, coma, and seizures.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation:

• Avoid use during the first trimester unless there is clear evidence of iron deficiency.
• The use of iron supplementation with folic acid and zinc is recommended during pregnancy when dietary intake is insufficient.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings:

• Use with caution in patients with iron overload disorders, such as hemochromatosis or hemolytic anemia.
• Failure to respond to treatment may require further investigation to rule out other causes of anemia.
• In patients with renal failure, there may be a risk of zinc accumulation.
